Welcome 2nd Amendment Supporters

Welcome to the first post on The Range Officer.

Here is my question?

What is the best home defense gun and flashlight combo?

Mine:
A Taurus PT 101 stoked with 12 rounds of Hornady 155 grain HP sitting next to a Pelican 760 (the LAPD light) and a SureFire C2 Centurion (better to have 2 lights handy I figure).

  2. Wrong. A 155mm howitzer and one of those lights they use when a new store is opening at night..they shine it up in the sky.

  3. any shot gun with bird shot is great for defence.

  4. 12 gauge pump with buckshot. I have an old Winchester nickel barrel. There's nothing like the sound of a shell being racked to give an intruder second thoughts.

  5. The Thompson 45 was marketed as a home defense gun and I suspect it would work just fine. Another gun that would be a tiny bit illegal but highly useful would be a sawed off 12 gauge. But the real answer is: whatever gun you have in your hand.

I'd be a little nervous about using a flashlight. They make such great targets. We're talking home defense? I know my home, an intruder will be on unfamiliar ground. Let him use a flashlight so I know where he is.

  6. Personally I don't use lights for home defense.
I've got a couple of those new curlyQ lights on the front and back porch, so as I can see outside. But inside, nobody knows my home like me. Lights out. My home. S&W 32HRmag under the pillow. Ak-47 under the dresser. Shotgun in the closet. Go ahead....Make my night.

  9. A 9mm Smith&Wesson M&P with 18, 17+1 124 grains of Hornardy's XTP's ahead of 8 grains of Blue Dot with a 12 guage LC Smith loaded with any size shot since the range will be short.Flashlight optional just to look at the remains.

  13. As all know real mothers are not to be messed with. I sleep with a short barrel 357Rossi under my pillow . And I have anothe 357 in bathroom, But if anyone wishes to challenge me. The surprises awaiting it will never let it sleep a full night the rest of its life. If it survives.

    the remains are).

  15. No problem Tom - I a former Marine Sgt. myself.

My other choice is a Taurus .357 Titanium, it is a 7 shot lightweight, 4” barreled wheel gun that is sweeter than cherry pie.

  16. HK40USP on night stand, mini 14, 30 rnd mag under dresser, 12ga pump with #6 bird shot in closet.

  17. A 9mm under my pillow and a 12 gauge pump and oo buckshot next to the bed.Nothing sounds better then a round being chambered.Makes a crooks ass tighten.

  18. An AK-47 in my hands with a Taurus 45 strapped to my side. I carry a Mag-Lite that is a foot and a half long, so, if I run out of bullets, break off my bayonnette in an intruder and for some reason the intruder is still kicking, well you can figure it out.

  19. Mossberg Tactical Shotgun, Taurus Judge...forget the flashlight (A.K.A. illuminated target)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Best home defense weapon in my opinion, a Taurus "Judge" revolver, 6" barrel, loaded with 410 buck and #4 shot shells plus two rounds of 45 long colt to finalize. forget lights, they become targets, you know your home layout, that's your edge. My backup is a Mossberg 12 ga. with pistol grip.

I have a Mossberg Tactical with 000 Buck that my girlfriend backs me up with as I clear our house with a Glock 33 (357 Sig). I figure if she is scared, all she has to do is point in general direction to get the job done. As far as the "best" it is what ever weapon you are comfortable with and can handle without thought in a high stress moment.

Oh yeah as far as flashlight. I highly recommend having a little surefire G2 or the like so that you can verify your target with it. Just don't turn it on until you are in a Firing Position that allows cover. Then make sure it is not one of your neighbors that came home drunk and went to wrong house. (It Happens)

  29. My home defense weapon is a Remington .45 semi-auto with 5 rounds of Magsafe 96 grain+p defender ammo in it as i do not want it to go through walls. I keep only 5 rounds in the 7 round clip because i do not want to keep the spring fully compressed. It is an older gun (ww2) but has never misfired. I keep it clean and oiled. If i cannot stop an intruder with 5 rounds of .45, the noise should make him want to leave--quick.

  32. No lights. Sawed of shotgun does best. Light shot will not mess up walls and furniture if you miss a few pelets. If you don't care about that, use 00 or 000 buck. You can throw the body in the hole you make in the wall.

  34. The flash light would be used for reconnaissance only

    ReplyDelete
  35. A Sig Sauer .357 with a full magazine of hollow points, no lights.
When B. Hussein and his band of liberal criminals somehow convince the other criminals to turn in their guns, this retired soldier will feel more comfortable not having to use his. Take my guns?...no chance!

  36. Well how bout a AK-47 in the bedroom, SKS in the hall, a pair of Ruger P90's with JHP ammo, and a 357 Mag for backup. If they try to run then 7mm mag or 8mm, maybe a 30-06 or a 45-70 for some fun. Just open the closet and grab one of a dozen or more loaded and ready to go. Who needs a flashlight, just open up and anything still moving slap in a new mag.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that the best home defense weapon is a 12 ga pump shotgun loaded with #8 shot and a semi-auto handgun of your choice as backup. My choice for the shotgun is a Mossburg 500 with pistol grip to replace the stock, hand grip to replace the slide and a six shot side saddle for spare ammo with 3 rounds of 00 buck shot and 3 rounds of rifled slug shot in case things get serious.

  39. Liberals are the problem, if we want to keep our 2nd Amendment and Constitution, they must be voted out! Start the action now don't wait for another election, get out the message, organize commitees and groups just like they did! We must save the U.S.A. My home defense is a pump shotgun with alternating slugs and buckshot, then if that didn't do the job my 10/22 with two 25rd clips would come into play and of course there is always my 8" razor sharp survival knife, but that is real messy!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Home defense, 12ga sawed off to 18" w/pistol grip with number one buckshot, no light inside. I know it better than anyone. .45 auto Colt Defender backup in case I run out of shotgun shells.

Just tape a cheap flash camera on top of your 12-gauge.....hit the button ,and shoot at the image you have in your mind. Then you have evidence to back it up, meanwhile, you are invisible, and the bad guy is blinded.

  42. Flashlight: Dorcy Spyder with Xenon bulb. Bright as an arc welder (well so it seems if you make the mistake of looking directly into it), and so affordable that we have EIGHT of these babies stashed everywhere - even in the vehicles. Costco was selling them for about $17.00 for a 2-pack at one time. I just love these little flashlights.

In the bedroom night stand: S&W 66 357 mag with Speer 125 gr Gold Dot Hollowpoints for her. Simple, durable, reliable, powerful, and has no safeties to fumble with. For him: FNH "Forty-Nine" DAO with night sights. 40 caliber semi-auto with 185 gr JHP. Again, simple, with no external safeties by design.

In the closet: His AND Hers Remington 1100 20 gauge extended mag shotgun with buckshot (1st round) followed by slugs. 55% less recoil than, and virtually as devastating as, a 12 gauge at close range. Watch Massad Ayoob's "Stressfire Shotgun" video if you doubt.

Immediate Perimeter defense: VEPR II 7.62x39mm semi-auto with 30 round AK mags loaded with Russian Wolf ammo. Yes, there's "better" ammo, but at short range (100 - 200 yards) it's no slouch, and it operates 100% reliably with the Wolf ammo.

Long range defense: Savage 116FSAK 300 Ultra Mag in a heavy John Plaster Choate tactical stock. Bushnell Elite 3200 scope. Hits the steel HARD at 1,000 yards, with Remington 180 gr Scirocco bullets zipping merrily along at 3300 fps. It's not cheap or pleasant to shoot, but I like having a rifle like this that can do such long range work without much fuss.

We live way out in the boonies, and will defend the homestead vigorously. We pray we don't have to.

  46. As a pistol packing grannie - I prefer my 5 shot Taurus Ultra-Lite, backed up by a 16 gauge shotgun. Nothing sounds so intimidating as a pump chambering a round. Between that and a full lighting outside with three cameras well hidden - well, you know the rest. May the burglars R-I-P!

  53. I don't have a favorite light, but I do have a favorite home defense weapon. A short (but legal) Remington 870 12 ga. Let's face it, when you pump a round into the chamber of this weapon, you can rest assured that anyone hears it and doesn't run the other way is certifiably insane and deserves to be shot for breaking into your house.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think even idiots (politicians) like Obama will be surprised by how many first line police will refuse to collect people's firearms. My guns will never be turned in and I will always carry concealed. Hillary is even more stupid then Bill, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Best self defense is to train hard with your weapons, know where all family members are when you think someone is in your house. Make sure before shooting or have no doubt. Family members need to let you know who they are and when they are coming home, etc. Get ammo that dosn't go through walls, like U.S. Marshals carry on airplanes. Keeping a cool head goes along with the weapon of your choice.

  56. It seems that the Mod 12, 12 G with slug barel and a 1911 45 has done a fine job for years. Remote, batery powered, radio controled lights in remote places in the house can realy screw up an intruder. Worked great about 8 yrs. back. Caught the guy full in the face with the butt of the Mod 12 when he made a run for the bay window. He didn't even see it comming!

  57. The best light is the light in my rotweiler's eyes. The sign on the front of my house that says, "Beware of 357" helps, too. But the sight of that big, cocked 44 in my little, old, shakey hands pointed between their legs should scare off the bravest of them.

  67. Dogs, frankly, in my opinion, are the best alarm system and deterrent. Not satisfied with that level of perimeter defense being sufficient to stave off the more insane, starving and pathological members in our deteriorating society, I have at hand a .38, a .357 and a .45 1911 almost at all times either at home or on the street or at work, all neatly concealed. I do have to invest in some shotguns, however.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Personally I have always felt that the best carry weapon is on that uses the .40 S&W round. But for home defense for that I do believe there is nothing better than a shotgun and for that I like the Mossberg 500 or 590 with an added bandoleer of ammo and the more candle power the better.
But as mentioned dogs are the best primary alert system, but your gun it the best defense system.

  69. The best I have seen for home defense is the Taurus "Judge". Either me or my wife can use and feel certain of making contact. Also, the neighbors are safer from slugs that might pass through the walls with higher grain ammo. We only want to defend our home and not hurt any innocent bystanders. I only use a light to go outside. It's a high beam light with four batteries.I'm a long time member of the NRA and appreciate all there work defending our 2nd amendent rights. Inside is a Kimber .45 loaded with hot Corbon +P HPs and 2 spare mags on the bottom shelf, SIG 228 9mm loaded with Corbon 115g +P HPs and 2 spare mags on the top shelf. Both have night sights. If I need to worry about external threats that I have some time to prepare for, I have an Ithaca 12ga with the slug barrel, an Aimpoint sight, and Brenneke slugs for anything out to 100yds, and a Bushmaster Varminter with target trigger, bipod, and 6-18X MilDot scope for longer range work.

For lights, I have 2 Liotec lights, the Behemoth and the Defender. The Defender goes with me when I'm out. The Behemoth is in the little cupboard in the headboard of our bed. Both have a great strobe feature that will blind and confuse an intruder. Although, since my eyes would be accustomed to the dark, and I know my house, I wouldn't turn on the light until I am prepared to take immmediate lethal action. The light would then be to confirm my target.

  80. Got a question, which I'm sure you'll agree is reasonable:

Why does every country on earth, I mean every country from the U.K. to Europe to So. America to Asia, and all 3rd World countries ... why do they ALL have very stringent gun control laws on the books? Are you sure you've interpreted the 2nd Amendment correctly, especially the historical context in which it was written?
    Happy Hunting.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Gun crime is on the rise in the UK - precisely because they have very strict laws that prevent the non-criminals from owning guns to defend themselves.

Gun ownership rates are very high in Switzerland but the rate of gun crime is very low.

In Switzerland the people still control the government. In the UK the government doesn't trust the people.

That's the reason most countries in the world have strict gun control laws - most countries in the world aren't free.

  82. To the individual questioning the interpretation of the 2nd Ammedment.

May I suggest some books to read that will provide the evidence (beyond doubt) of the meaning of the Bill of rights in general and the 2nd Ammendment in particular. These books address all of your questions:

The Bill of Rights Primer - Akhil Amar and Les Adams

The Second Ammendment Primer - Les Adams

The Samuri, The Mountie, and the Cowboy - David B. Kopel

The Founders' Second Ammendment - Stephen P. Halbrook

More Guns, Less Crime - John R. Lott Jr.

    Death by Government - R. J. Rummel

Death by Gun Control - Aaren Zelman and Richard W. Stevens

I could list many more, but these should suffice.

If you are indeed interested in understanding the 2nd Ammendment and the Constitution as the Founders' envisioned it, walk... no, RUN to the nearest book store or library and get these books. They are also available online.
