Pick 5 and Only 5

If you could only own 5 guns what would they be? Here are mine:

.22 rimfire rifle – the 10/22 is my favorite
.40 S&W pistol - for conceal carry and bedside. I’ll take a Polymer framed Kahr.
.223 – an AR-15, accuracy and firepower
30-06 – bolt action, scoped, a Ruger 77 or Remington 700.
20 Gauge - Model 870 – I have to admit I struggled with this one.

I live in Virginia, so that means deer, turkey, coyote, small game and birds. Also need to protect the homestead and the AR & .40 can take care of that nicely.

What do you say?

  1. 1. SKS
    2. P97D .45
    3. .22 bolt action rifle
    4. M870 12 ga.
    5. .357 revolver

    Ammo in sufficient qty.

  2. Good choices but mine would differ just a little, First, would be a glock mod 19, for parts and ammunition availability, also the proper defensive loads make the 9mm an entirely adequate self defense round. Second, would be a .223 AR style rifle in an m2 configuration with a holograph type sight for home defense, again because of parts and ammunition. Third would be a .22 rimfire rifle I like the Ruger 10/22 also. Fourth would be .308 bolt action I think the Remington BDL is a nice gun but I like the Savage accutrigger also, and last would be an 870 Remington also, but in a 12 guage, availability of ammo being the prime concern there.

  3. My choice is similar:

.22 rimfire rifle - I like the Marlin Model 60
.45 ACP - Carried this in the military - proven history of self-defense use
.223 an AR-15 w/ bull barrel - same reasons plus a NATO standard round
    .308 Remington 700 w/ bull barrel - I love the 30-06 but settled on the .308 because it's a NATO standard
12 Guage - Model 870 - harvests everything from birds to deer with the right loads & good close range self defense tool

  4. Great choices. For the .22, I prefer my old Remington Nylon 66. That rifle is all but indestructible.

  5. I would only make 2 changes. Swap the 40 S&W for a 9MM, (I like the polymer frames, but would probably opt for a small Glock, although the Kahr is the favorite of our local police for backup guns.) and swap the 20 GA for a 12 GA. (The 870 is the best in shotgun for the money, maybe ever.) The first change so that you have a current military/police round, so that you can relaod from your enemy or your ally, depending on the upcoming situation, and for the 12 because it has greater firepower and easier round availability.

Given this, my personal 5 are a little different. I went with the Walther P22 pistol (long barrel) for the .22 as it is easy to carry and hide, and is easily accurate enough for hunting small game. A Walther PP in .32 for my wife. (Easy to shoot, almost no recoil, and properly loaded, almost as effective as a 380 auto.) Sig P230 in 380 auto for me. These three can be easily carried concealed, are easy to shoot very accurately, and pretty effective rounds are available. They also make good home defense guns as they are small enough that they would be hard to grab. A cut down 870 in 12 GA (just over legal) is the home defense gun, but also does a nice job on birds and small game. With slugs or buck shot, I could take deer, but haven't. The shorter barrel actually made it easier to carry and shoot in the woods, with no loss in effectiveness on rabbits and quail. (Yes, I was surprised, too.) We don't do that much hunting, but the .22 and 12 GA will take 90% of what we would be able to hunt. (I am out of luck on elk.)

The last is a CZ52 in 7.62X25. It was purchased as a last ditch throwaway gun, with a round capable of penetrating up to a class II vest. If all hell breaks loose, it is the gun I would use to get the guns and ammo I would need to defend family and country. Hope I don't need it.

  6. I suppose I'd go with the choices I've already made:
1911 Govt 5", .45ACP - There are many great choices.
    1911 Commander 4", .45ACP - Kimber Pro Raptor II
    1911 Officer 3", 9mm - Springfield EMP
    Marlin 1894CB .357/.38 Carbine
    .357/.38 Revolver - Ruger SP101 is a good choice

  7. .22 Rifle
    .22 Handgun
    .40 Handgun
    5.56 AR
    12 gauge pump

If this were for a survialist-type list, I'd be tempted to go with an AK or an M1 Carbine. If I hunted, a full-sized rifle would be a must.

  8. 1911 a standard for time, #2 .380 auto for your pocket, #3 Mod 700 in .308 or 30-06 all purpose FUDD gun #4 high quality AR-15 carbine #5 12ga O/U mid grade trap gun, real fun day at moderate prices

  9. .22 rimfire - Marlin 39A
1911 .45ACP full size slightly modified for carry
    AR15 M4gery 1/7 twist in 5.56 - not .223
Rem 700 .308 with M24 barrel, McMillan stock and Badger metal.
    Rem 870 in 12 ga.

For some reason this sounds exactly like some of the pieces I already have.

  10. Good choices, but mine would be a little different. I concur with the .40 S&W but would also have with me the venerable M1911A1, the M-1 Garand, my 12-gauge Mossberg with folding stock, and my .22 Beretta.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lightweight Commander
    Glock 30
M16 (there seems no apparent ban on them for the sake of this discussion).
    .308
    12 gauge

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1911, .45. Proven performance, parts and ammo availability.
9mm Sig p226R, (issued) With TLR-1 lite and crimson trace laser. 9mm ammo availability
12 gauge, 870. Versatility and ammo availability.
.22 10/22. ammo and lots of it. versatility.
.223 AR type. Ammo avaiability. And it'll kill anything in florida and anything within range of my eyes - optics included. (ACOG) so I don't need a .308.

  13. Since I don't have the money to throw around like some people, I'd rely (in this order) on my:
    Mossberg 12 gauge pump
    1911 S&W 45
    1944 Springfield 03A3
    Marlin mod. 60 22LR semi-auto
Marlin mod. 60 22LR Bolt Action

  14. going with the 45acp ruger (already own it) next 12ga magnum pump (can fire 2 3/4 3 or 3 1/2 inch shells) already own that also, Ultimag. next has got to be a 22 cal. most likely a long gun. next is a 308 bolt action with fixed 4 power (did i metion i have a savage with acu-trigger) 308 is readily available, can take any game in the world with it and makes a great sniper rifle if the need arises. the last choice would be something more tactical, perhaps a m249 SAW... no i dont have one but did in the corps, very useful.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I see mostly good choices. Mine would Ruger 10-22 a ranch rifle in 223 but with a different stock. 45 acp in a glock 36 for concealed. 308 bolt gun in a pre 64 model 70 and the 870 in 12 gauge.. I do favor calibers that are nato standard or 7.62 by 39 in other guns....
    keep the faith....Hawk

    Ruger 678MkII .22

  17. Five guns? Ruger 10/22, H&K p30 9mm, S&W 460XVR, AR-15, Springfield Armory M1A .308 Coincidentally, I already own each of these! lol More important (almost) than the firearm itself is the amount of ammo for each and I think a minimum of 1000 rds of centerfire ammo for each weapon is needed and at least 5000 rds of 22LR. Again, I'm covered.

    ReplyDelete
  18. .22 Handgun (small game)
    44 mag/44 Spl Handgun or .45 1911 (defense/hunting)
    12 gauge shotgun (defense/hunting)
.308 rifle (Garand, M1A, or AR type) (defense/hunting)
.22LR or mag or .223 AR-type (small game).

Good availability of ammo for all in time of scarcity (except .44). Versitile - dual use for most. Choices allow use of smaller calibers for wife/younger family members.

  19. The 5 for me is

    1. The new Judge. Both Shot Shells and 45 cal power. Home Defense

    2. AR-15 .223 best defense against Obama for power range reload ammo. We'll need a lot soon.

    3. .204 power, fast and flat great medium range sniper.

    4. Mini 14 close range lots of lead fast.

    5. Any 50 cal for penetration of vests.

By the way one of the questions ask of special military forces is if they are willing to fire on civilians in the event some of us refuse to give up our guns it the government were to confiscate them

CLIENT PAID TO REPLACE MY BARREL BUT THE SQUIB AND OTHER DEFECTIVE AMMO ARE INEXCUSABLE. WORSE, SINCE THE COMPANY IS FROM BRAZIL, GOOD LUCK TRYING TO GET THINGS "MADE RIGHT."

  26. Five guns?
    (1) 1911 style in .45ACP
    (2) Browning High Power in 9 X 19mm Luger
    (3) Bushmaster AR15 Carbine in .223/5.56 NATO
    (4) Remington Model 1100 in 12 ga.
    (5) Savage Model 110 in 7mm Rem Mag.

I have other firearms, but these are the 5 that I would take with me in a social chaos situation. I have plenty of ammunbition for each of these, and have begun to stockpile even more since November 2008. i haveven bartered ammo for weapons where I have a sufficient amount for others where I may be lacking.
More folks here in Texas are getting sidearms in the .45ACP. Probably by the demonstrated stopping power. That's why .45ACP ammo is scarce in the stores.

  27. 1) A Glock 23 40-cal.
    2) A Mossberg 590 12-ga.
    3) An SKS
    4) A 50-cal. heavy machine gun
    5) A grenade launcher
    6) A flamethrower (I get six because the grenade launcher is mounted on the Mossberg...two-for-one deal)

I would also get myself a tactical nuke if I could.

  51. A 12ga pump or double barrel. Practically maintenance free, idiot proof, ammunition widely available, and will take anything that walks this continent from gophers to grizzly bears.

A Ruger 10/22. The only semi auto on my list. Like the AK47, it's almost maintenance free and practically indestructible. Accurate as hell.

A larger caliber rifle; bolt action, lever action, or pump, for which ammunition is readily available. We're looking at 270, 30-30, 30-06; or military surplus like 8mm, or 7.62x54. I'm avoiding semi autos here because of the increased maintenance. I have a 98 Mauser and a Russian Nagant, both of which are tack drivers; plus sealed tins of ammo.

A quality revolver in .357mag. 4-6 inch barrel. Shoots a very wide variety of readily available ammo. I have a GP100, but Smith and Taurus make some really nice stuff too.

I'd actually be quite happy having only the four already listed, so the fifth one is kind of a tossup. If I'm looking at defending my homestead I guess I'd go for an AK or SKS, with plenty of ammo and 30 round mags. If I lived in an urban environment I might opt for a Taurus Judge.

I chose these guns for ease of maintenance and ready availabilty of a wide range of ammo. If the crap ever does hit the fan, and the gun grabbers get their way, I might find it problematic to find fodder for my 257 Roberts, or 454 Casull.

  52. Gosh only 5. I'd have to get rid of a bunch. Naturally the 22 rim or magnum for starters. Any shotgun 20ga or better (double or pump), 30.06 with 40mm or better scope, any pistor starting with a 4 for the caliber in your own preferred style and type, and #5 would be tough but something in the semi-auto arena with several clips (once again I think 308 or better). It is better to aim and fire and hit than spray and miss. No name needed.

  57. interesting that no one mentioned a muzzleloader. powder and caps and lead casted balls are always available. any takers? of course, defense with this may leave you with one good shot, but as a meat catcher what is more available when you are 100 miles from a ammo shop.

  58. Seems like a consensus here...I'd have to go along
    1) Ruger 10/22
    2) Bushmaster AR15 in .223
    3) Glock 17 9mm
    4) Winchester Mod 70 Featherweight 30-06
    5) Mossberg 500A 12 ga.

I wonder what the wife's choices will be...to those worried about confiscation, I say-
"When guns are outlawed, I will be an outlaw!"

  59. 1) Colt Woodsman .22
    2) 1911 45 ACP
    3) Glock 22 40 S&W
    4) S&W 1917 45 ACP
    5) Thompson in 45 ACP

Woodsman, best little learning and accurate .22 ever designed.
The 1911 and the 1917 complement each other nicely with plenty of mags and full moon clips.
The glock since I bought it off a late friend of mine and I have competed with it.
The Thompson for medium range work with plenty of mags. Surprisingly accurate at 50 to 100 yards.

I do have a muzzleloader, but if they pass through CIFTA, we can kiss everything goodbye. My interpretation of that treaty is that the President could ask the UN to send in troops from other countries to conduct door to door raids to confiscate firearms and all of our rights and constitutional protections are going to be history.

  61. It's fun to pick 5 just for fun. In reality if you had to pick only 5 it's going to be for defense of family and country from a tyranical government (it's coming) or foreign invasion. So, I'll stick with military or survival type weapons.
    1. Select fire M4 or other .556mm (.223)rifle with high end optics/night vision OR Select fire AK-47 (Russian would be nice) w/optics. Ammo and mags of course
    2. Hi Cap 1911 .45 or Beretta 9mm. Mags and ammo. Laser.
    3. Remington 12 gauge tactical auto loader shotgun. Laser and ammo.
    4. HK-91 type .308 sniper weapon system. Night vision/high quality sniper scope. Mags/ammo
    5. HK MP5 or equivalent select fire, laser/optics, mags and ammo.

In the event you NEED the weapons, having full auto option is, well, not an option. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Now for long distance: I would go with my Remington Mod.700 bolt-action w/a 3x9 scope. For medium range I would go with my 30-30 Winchester (I would also use this one for all (two-legged) varmits. For plinking and survival shooting, a Winchester Wildcat .22 bolt action; a Winchester 12-gauge pump Turkey Combo that will hold five+one without the plug; and an AR-15 for lod time's sake. Oo-RAH!

  101. 1. .308 on an AR platform, leupold VX series scope, 500-1000m range

    2. .223 M4 Carbine with EOtech holographic, backup iron sights, 150-450m range (out to 500/600 with optional low scope)

    3. Springfield Operator .45 1911 ACP, primary close quarters work...all of the great craftsmanship and match grade components of the trophy match stuff, but with some other options that make it more tactically sound.

    4. S/W 6904 subcompact 9mm, (my carry weapon), for backup

    5. 12 guage shotgun with CCO or Holographic. Any number of makers/models on this. A shotgun is more of a tool than just a weapon. It's also great to put in the hands of a friend that isn't a marksman (in the event you need fire support but they can't shoot worth a darn)

All of the above would be predicated on the shooter getting a lot of practice with each. Not just standing in front of a paper target and carefully knocking out bullseyes. Reflexive fire drills, magazine changing, rapid target acquisition, moving target engagement, etc.

Also, the general rule is to never put a weapon in the field with less than a 'standard combat load'. I don't always agree with the military rules regarding this, but reason dictates that those rules were formed from actual combat experience.

My advice is to employ the weapon systems as such:

.308 would be paired with a shooting bag, complete with 100 rounds of selected ammo, 1/4 of which would be prepared in spare magazines, and all of the gun-specific tools and cleaning supplies. It would likely be carried in a vehicle and removed only if necessary

.223 would be carried with a 3-point sling, not less than 210 rounds, all of which would be distributed in magazines, in a chest rig.

.45 would be carried in a drop holster, with no less than 7 fully loaded magazines, carried in spare mag pouches on the belt and holter.

9mm would be carried in a cross-draw configuration on my chest, 2 fully loaded magazines, one in the weapon, one elsewhere.

shotgun would be kept in the house or the truck.

  116. I usually do not create a comment, but I browsed a few
of the responses here "Pick 5 and Only 5". I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it's okay. Is it simply me or do some of the responses appear like they are written by brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting on other online sites, I'd like to follow anything new you have to post.

Would you post a list of all of your social networking pages like
your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?
