1) My Ruger #3 in 45-70 - kicked so hard with hot loads it split my lip.
2) I have the Carcano rifle that was used for ballistics from the Kennedy assassination given to me by one of the officers of the NRA and my father's Walther P-38 made in 1944 he left to me when he died.

1) Well not a rifle but the hardest kicking firearm would be my 12 GA Beretta folding shotgun. It's a single shot that weighs a measly 5 lbs. Even lite trap loads will wake you up but magnum rounds from this thing are just brutal.

SAKO TRG-S in 30-378 with 180gr Barnes X going 3550 fps over a chrony. Rifle had no optic and measly 3/16" thick plastic pad on it. Some kind of sick recoil pad joke the Finns play on us I guess. Rifle weighed 7lb 4oz. I fired it from standing too. Kicked hard. 17rds fired in first test session, shoulder, neck, spine hurt for days.
ReplyDeleteClose second would be an iron sighted Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 375 H&H with warm 300gr handloads. That had a pad on it but only weight 7lbs 1oz. I miss that rifle actually.
Maybe a third entry too, buddy had a 340 Weatherby for a while but that was long ago. Fun to shoot compared to my two above.

The hardest kicking firearm was a Browning Auto gas operated shotgun, 12 ga. The gas port was drilled oversized at the factory, and even the lightest field loads would leave your shoulder paralyzed for 30 minutes.

ReplyDeleteThe hardest kicking gun I ever fired was my uncles'12 ga. double barrel. Not only was it heavy but it knocked me for a loop since I only weighed about 60 pounds at age six. One gun I will never part with is my Remington 742 Woodsmaster .308.
ReplyDeleteThe hardest whacking I ever got from a firearm was when I was about 5 years old, daddy let me shoot a 12 Ga. Poke Stock. We went out on the back porch and he stood me in front of him as he kneeled down, pulled the trigger I went back and knocked him down too. See that 12 Ga. had a kick for sure, two with one shot. (Thanks dad, I really do miss you so much)
ReplyDeleteAs far as a gun I would never sell. Browning .22 pump (Trombone) daddy got that for me when I was 8 or so for $89.00 in Ohio over 40 years ago. Still looks like it just came out of the box.

ReplyDeleteNever sell?? Probably none of them (except a small .380 backup, which is sort of useless), but I am particularly fond of my .44 Mag Colt Anaconda, 6 inch, stainless. No reason, just really enjoy it!

ReplyDeleteThe handgun with the greatest recoil would probably be a 454 Casual, for a rifle it would be a Remington 700 in 300 Winchester Magnum but then there is the Shotgun with a 3 inch OO.

Then there was that question about what caliber is best for the military.
My opinion is the 40 S&W; to be precise the M&P40.
The amount of ammo is almost the same although a couple rounds less; the stopping power is considerably greater.
My Dad, always fond of a cheap deal bought a Russian made single shot 12 gage from KMart. I always said it was probably made from cast-off/out of specification sewer pipe. I used it to hunt rabbits on San Juan Island when I was stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. It kicked like a damned Army mule and is still just as ugly. (meaning no offense to mules)

ReplyDeleteI would only sell one of my guns if financial calamity loomed or if the chance for gain was simply too enticing. In any case, the last one I would part with is my .308 Springfield Armory M1A with all of the features on it that Barbara Boxer hates.
Shoulder fired M-60 machine gun on full auto -circa Viet Nam '68. (Hold it sideways so it doesn't climb on you!) Never part with my AK-47 taken during a raid on a VN command post.

ReplyDeleteWeatherby necked up to 50 caliber with a 600+ grain bullet at around 2,500 fps. Fred Wells claimed that there was no big game on the planet that it would not penetrate end to end and I believe it. One round penetrated over 36 inches of packed crushed granite and kept right on going down range. It was pretty brutal.

I wondered at the time why he held me from behind before I pulled the trigger.The bruise on my shoulder told the story best. He's passed away and I inherited the 12 gauge. ReplyDeleteMy go to rife - one I will never get rid of? That is tough. It would have to be my bolt action .22 Marlin Squirrel rifle - it is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.
At the time I was 15 years old and I fired an M1 for the first time, but I think my cousins .35 was pretty good also. Part with any of my guns, no way charley, especiall my lugers. Now we should not call the raghead in chief any names, he is doing the best that he can to destroy our country as I don't believe it is his country.

Hardest kick I ever got was from my Remington 870 12 gauge 3" magnum turkey load. I hurt for days and my shoulder was bruised.

Hardest hitting .375 H&H magnum. Hurt me most was a light 12 Ga Coach gun from the hip like in the movies. Fired rear trigger and front trigger ripped finger open. Hell that was over 35 years ago and I don't ever believe what I see in movies. My sons wnon't make that mistake.

I am a 62 yr old grandmother with artheritis so shooting some days can be difficult at best. I have found that my short barrel 357 is the toughest for me to shoot accurately. My 45 Colt officer also. However, my Colt 45 Government is wonderful. Recoil is strong but smooth and allows me to let the gun do it's job without needed control. Thank God for Colt!

THE HARDEST BUCKING GUN THAT I HAVE SHOT WOULD BE MY MOSSBERG 500 12 GAUGE WITH A 3" MAGNUM "00" BUCK LOAD. I REPLACED THE STOCK AND FOREGRIP WITH PISTOL GRIPS. THREE SHOTS OF THAT STUFF WILL LEAVE THE HANDS SORE FOR A WEEK! I WOULD NOT SELL ANY GUN THAT I POSSESS AND "NO ONE" WILL TAKE MY GUNS AS LONG AS I CAN KEEP PULLING THE TRIGGER!

The first is a Ruger SA in .44 Mag. That buckhorn
grip ensures that you're gonna get the web of
your shooting hand with the hammer spur.
Second would be S&W's ultralite 2" with full
house .38 spl. (I do'nt remenber the material
used for the frame.) It hurt after only 5 rounds.
As to a gun I'd never sell: ALL of them. I've
only sold 3 guns in 45 years, and regretted
every one.

ReplyDeleteHardest was a friends .458 Win Mag with his "special" handloads. Knocked me back three steps while he laughed like crazy. For some unknown reason, I fired two more rounds before quitting. (Also, fired six "special" handloads from his Ruger .44 Mag. Couldn't shake hands for about four days)

ReplyDelete2. My dad's Japanese Type 99 Arisaka, 7.7, captured on Guadalcanal, with original bayonet w/ scabbard, plastic muzzle protector, cleaning rod, sight with aircraft wings intact, dust cover made from a food tin, matching numbers, mum has double knife cuts.
Not me, but a gundealer friend got in a 600 H&H Express double rifle and had never shot one, so got a box of shells. He thought and thought about the warning on the box "Do not fire from a prone position". The more he thought the more he procrastinated until he sold it without ever putting a round through it.
ReplyDeleteI've never shot anything more than a 12 gauge pump or a .54 ca. muzzleloader. I'm not a glutton for punishment. Brings to ind however of an incident when we were at a small gunshop just shootin' the breeze when one fellow said:

Well the fellow that said this was named George and he was just a little guy at about 4'8". Charlie who was the owner of the shop replied:
"Yea, your right about that gun, but just remember, you were a six footer when you bought it!"
My pick for a favorite gun was a Colt Woodsman. You could drive nails at 30 feet with that little pistol.
Most Kick: 458 Mag. Owner had showed his NY buddies how to pistol shoot it. It spent 8 weeks in the gun shop. He spent 8 weeks in hospital getting hand and side of face rebuilt.

as we'll need it soon. The 4th American Revolution is on the near horizon (1776,1812,1861).

Back in the late 1960's I bought a plymouth(the only name on the gun plymouth gun company,no serial numbers either,one or two small numbers when the barrel was broken open) shotgun 12 gauge double barrel.I shot it one time it nearly broke my shoulder with a light dove load.paid $25.00 for it and sold it the next day for $30.00.next to it a Franchi 12 gauge double barrel weighed about 6 pounds kept it less than a week.

(Not that I could ever foresee selling a personal arm.) A four-inch, royal blue Colt Python lovingly tuned by the late Fred Sadowski. It doesn't get much better than that!

ReplyDeleteI don't own a weapon I hesitate to use on a "recoil" basis. Kick doesn't have a place in a discussion about weapons. The government tried to get us killed in the transfer to the Maggott-16 over the 308/30-06. If you shoot an enemy with the 30-06, they are down for good. But the logic of taking two enemies out of the fight cause one has to drag the other away because they were shot with the smaller weapon is ludicrous. Shoot twice and kill them both, and at a much further distance. The best weapon as a sidearm would, in my humble opinion, be the .40 S&W
